My final four images for DSDN 142, Project 2. I changed my original idea to a grid, because I liked the idea of noise within a grid, that eventually breaks free of the grid structure.

DSDN 104: Richard Sweeny (Precedents)
Richard Sweeney is a designer who works with folding paper. On his website I found some interesting and inspirational models he has done, and am looking at trying out some of his methods.
I found this one particularly interesting. Even if I don't end up using the folding technique, the way the paper flows down is really interesting, and is a good example to base possible acrylic twisting off
The slotting or 'slice form' technique used in this piece is also interesting, though I don't think it will work well for my model, because of the thin 'ribbony' parts I have.
I really like the flowing style of this building, it is similar to the style of flowing I am looking at putting in my model.
DSDN 104: Stacking Technique
I have tried out the stacking technique and come to the conclusion that it won't work for my model. My model has too many this 'ribbony' parts for the stacking technique to be effective. This model is help together with blue tack, and is made of spare card that I had lying around.
DSDN 104: Testing
I am going to try out this folding technique in paper/card, and see if it works well for my model. I am possibly thinking of trying out a layering technique which looks similar to this paper model by Richard Sweeney, but without the folding.
Also, here are some of my initial sketches, with ideas for this assignment.

DSDN 112: School of Design Issues.
I have been unable to upload my project to the School of Design website. When ever I try to add an image of text it says there is an "Error writing to database". I will try again tomorrow.
DSDN 142: Update
I will be making my squares/rectangles come down from the top of the image, almost like leaves falling of a tree in autumn. I am considering using a gold/orange/red colour scheme, as these are autumn colours.
DSDN 142: Sketches
This is a quick sketch of what I am planning to do, but I have decided to do squares/rectangles instead of triangles as I can manipulate them more effectively.
The first column will have a stack of squares arranged on the bottom, which will begin to move upwards and change shape/grow through each column.

Covered Gloves
I
explored the sense of touch with my interactive object, and the idea that the
senses can be confused by an unexpected feeling or experience.
The
user puts on a glove, and reaches into the corresponding tin, only to find
the object or substance inside the tin doesn’t feel how they would expect it
to.
My
object is made up of a combination of latex gloves, Velcro strips, wooden
rings, cloth gloves and aluminium tins.
I
investigated many different substances to go in the gloves, such as jelly,
golden syrup, water, and hair gel. None of these substances worked due to
issues with melting and movement issues. In the end I settled on tightly
packed flour and a thick corn flour and water mixture. I also tried sealing
the gloves in many different ways such as melting, taping and gluing, but
none of these options sealed the gloves together properly, and caused
leaking. I used a large wooden ring, which I stretched the latex gloves over
(They are pulled tight enough to seal together effectively), and Velcro
strips to prevent the gloves from slipping off.

DSDN 112: Rings
After trying varying types of glues and tapes to stick together I have come to a conclusion: They don't work.
Instead I have made wooden rings that I will stretch the gloves over. I will either glue or staple the gloves to the rings, which ever works best. I will also have two tins with my two different materials (one solid and one liquid) that the user will touch.

DSDN 112: Jelly Tests.
In Friday's studio I tested my 'Jelly Glove'. Unfortunately it didn't go so well. The jelly inside the glove ended up melting and becoming completely liquefied due to the warmth of the users hand. I am now considering using a cornflour and water mixture as it will provide the desired effect, and it won't melt.

DSDN 142: Triangles?
I am considering using triangles for my project, with a structured triangle pattern at the start. I will have them changing size and rotating as they progress throuh to the other images.

DSDN 112: Jelly and Golden Syrup!
I will be making three different gloves, each with a different substance inside it. One will have water, one will have jelly and one will have golden syrup. Each glove will have a different effect on the users sense of touch.

DSDN 104: Rendering
I will not be re-rendering my models as in the crit the tutors said my render (which was missing a few models) didn't need re-doing. I have included a screenshot of all of my models in the post with my 81 iterations.

DSDN 104: 81 Iterations
This is my final render for my 81 iterations.
This was one of my test renders, as some of the models have been cut out. I fixed it, but 3ds Max crashed halfway through my 11 hour render, and I didn't have enough time to re-render it.

This is a screenshot of my 81 fianl models in 3ds Max. This is how they were supposed to be laid out, with all of the model included.
After 4 days of constant render/3ds Max problems, I'm finally done!
DSDN 104: Final Hero Model
This is my final 'Hero' Model for DSDN 104.
I feel that this final model captures my narrative well, It cascades down from an originating point, and it changes directions and adapts as it flows downwards.
I used a water texture as my inspirations were waterfalls.
There was supposed o be a light blue plane in the background which showed up in my test render, but for some reason when I did my final render it didn't show up.

DSDN 112: Glove test
In the Friday tutorial I did some testing. I taped two latex gloves together with water in between, using duct tape (which didn't seal them together very well). I'll need to use glue of some type to seal it better.
DSDN 104: 3ds Max Problems
I am having issues with 3ds Max, Perspective mode is practically unusable, as I can't edit any of my models in it and they keep disappearing, so I have to us Orthographic mode, which makes lighting and texturing very difficult. I will have to render in low resolution first to check that everything looks right.

DSDN 104: Progress
I have continued working in 3ds Max on my models, and I now have a total of 56. I am still having trouble positioning my models and moving the camera around if I am in Perspective mode, but if I switch to orthographic mode, most of these issues get fixed.

DSDN 104: Inspiration
I think that gymnastic ribbons capture my idea and words really well. They flow and cascade, and can change at any moment in reaction to the directions of the user or their surroundis which makes them very adaptable.
DSDN 142: Starting Project 2.
Today in the DSDN 142 tutorial we started project 2. I tried a few patterns out in the Pattern Maker project, and looked at some examples on openprocessing.com
DSDN 112: Project 1 Update.
We had the interim presentation for DSDN 112 yesterday, and i got some interesting feedback. One idea was to try and cover the gloves in some kind of fabric so the experience is more unexpected. Another suggestion was to change the water in the glove to something else, maybe Jelly or golden syrup. I will make a few experiments, and try out the different suggestions.

DSDN 112: Proposal
For this project I will be experimenting with the sense of
touch. I will create a glove that has a layer of water inside it. When worn,
this glove will alter the sense of touch making it an interesting experience
for the user.
I will also have multiple containers with objects in them.
These containers will have things such as sand or ball bearings, which will be
used with the glove to enhance the experience. Since these substances are quite
interesting to touch without any kind of alterations to the senses, they will
be intriguing to use with the glove.
The glove itself will be a combination of two rubber/latex
gloves. One glove will be sealed inside the other, with a layer of water in
between them. This will ensure that the user’s hand will remain dry, which will
be an important factor when interacting with the glove; if the user’s hand is
wet this will change how they react to touching the objects. The user will not
know the gloved is filled with water when they first go to put it on.
The user will interact with each of the provided materials,
and be surprised by the differences in them, and how different they feel,
compared to what they expected.

DSDN 112: Decisions!
For my project I will be making a glove that will alter the sense of touch with water. I will need to find a way of making a glove that will have two layers, with a layer of water in between to keep the user from getting wet hands. I have experimented with a few different types of gloves, and I think I will end up using rubber dishwashing gloves. I still need to find some way of sealing water between two of them. I will try melting them together and using a sealant.

DSDN 104: 35 Models
Here are my 35 models so far.
I had some problems with 3ds Max, whenever I tried to move any of my models around, they were snapping to grid, so I couldn't lay them out properly. They were supposed to flow around, as my inspiration for my models was waterfalls, and gymnastic ribbons. I will upload another copy of this image as soon as I work out how to turn gridlock off.
